Inspection Policies & FAQs

What do I need for a walk-in inspection?
Bring your active Massachusetts vehicle registration. The VIN on the registration must match the dashboard. The state-mandated fee for a standard inspection is $35.
Will a Check Engine light fail my car?
Yes. Any illuminated "Check Engine" light triggers an automatic emissions failure in the state of Massachusetts. We provide on-site OBD-II diagnostics and mechanical repairs to resolve the codes so your vehicle can pass.
What is the 15-Year Rolling Rule for emissions?
In Massachusetts, vehicles that are 15 model years old or older are exempt from the emissions test. However, they are still required to pass a strict safety inspection every year.
Are Electric Vehicles (EVs) required to get inspected?
Yes. While fully electric vehicles are exempt from emissions testing, they are still required to undergo a comprehensive safety inspection annually to ensure roadworthiness.
What is the 60-Day Re-Test rule?
If your vehicle fails, you receive a "Reject" sticker (a red R). You have exactly 60 calendar days to complete the necessary repairs and return for one free re-test at the same station where it originally failed.
I just bought a car. When is my inspection due?
Newly purchased or transferred vehicles must be inspected within exactly 7 calendar days of the registration date.
Why didn't I get a full 12-month sticker?
If you inspect your vehicle late, your new sticker will still bear the number of the month in which the inspection was originally due. You do not gain extra months by being late.
What does the Uber/Lyft (TNC) inspection cover?
A TNC inspection is an additional 19-point safety check mandated by the DPU for rideshare drivers. It covers interior cleanliness, seatbelts, doors, windows, HVAC, and exterior lights. This is separate from your standard annual state inspection.
